Strawberry Plant Basics

The ideal soil pH for strawberry plants is between 5.5 and 6.5. These plants require well-draining soil, so it is recommended to choose a high-quality potting mix that contains perlite. To enhance the soil's nutrient content, you should mix in about one-third compost. This will create a well-draining, nutrient-rich soil that will be perfect for your strawberries.

It is crucial to regularly check the pH of your soil to ensure it remains within the optimal range.

Environment

If the daily temperature in your area exceeds 80 degrees Fahrenheit, it is best to start your strawberry plants in a location that is not directly exposed to the sun, such as indoors with a grow light or outdoors on a covered porch. If you have the opportunity to start them outdoors in the spring, you can place them directly in your gardening bed or pots, but be sure to mulch them to help retain moisture when watered.

Watering

If your strawberry plants are started indoors or in a shaded area, you may only need to water them twice a week. However, once they are placed in full sun, you will need to adjust your watering schedule to accommodate the faster drying rate of the soil due to the direct sunlight.

Transplanting Outdoors

When the plant has developed a few new stems, you can transplant it outdoors. This typically occurs about two weeks after the initial planting. For the first two days, you should place the plant in a shaded area to allow it to acclimate to the new environment's humidity and temperature. After this initial acclimation period, you can gradually expose the plant to more sunlight, increasing the amount each day until it reaches its permanent location.

Before starting the transplanting process, be sure to mulch the soil to help it retain moisture when you water the plant.
